Underfloor Heating

There are 4 types of underfloor heating that RSA Bardo Electrical Systems installs.

Under Tile Heating:
Unlike conventional under floor heating systems which were placed on the slab under the screed and tile surface.
Tile heating is placed directly below the tile surface. This method of application increases the reaction time of the system by up to 80%, resulting in lower duty cycles. This in turn provides for an energy efficient system with economical running cost. 

Tile Heating systems are manufactured from a multi strand durable E.F.T. insulated element fitted with a full multi strand earth shielding which is connected to the house ELCB. This makes the product complaint with legislation and safe to install even in wet areas. 

In most applications a tile heater with a power density of 200 watt per m² will cover ± 70% of the actual floor area (depending on the individual room's heat loss factors) The configuration of the element and layout is manipulated in such a way that the heating element is positioned in the areas were you will be in contact with the floor surface. 

Bathrooms and dresser units are dealt with individually and generally have a 100% floor coverage ensuring no unwanted cold patches on the floor, as you are generally bare foot in these areas. 

Tile heating applications are done on the screed surface. Floors are prepared with a primer which ensures proper bond between the screed and the floor heating system. This ensures no delamination and tiles lifting at a later stage. The heating element is covered with a layer of protective fibreglass mesh and covered with a super screed and bonding agent application. The entire application is ± 1.5mm thick as to not elevate the existing floor height. 

All floor heating systems are managed by either analogue, digital or intelligent digital programmable thermostats, ensuring total comfort at affordable running cost.

Underwood and Laminate Heating Solution

A common misconception exists in the market that a timber floor cannot be heated, this is incorrect. With a specially designed High Coverage Low power out put heating system, Laminate wood flooring, engineered wood flooring as well as most species of genuine wood flooring can successfully be heated without any damage to the floor. 

The low power heater has a power output of 130 watt per m² and covers the entire floor area, ensuring an even distribution of heat through the timber floor. This in turn ensures even expansion and contraction throughout the wood floor, with no tension on the floor joints. 

All wood floor heating systems are managed by a dual management thermostat that measures ambient as well as floor surface temperature, by means of a remote probe sensor being placed below the floor surface. The probe ensures that maximum floor temperature of 27ºC is not exceeded (as specified by the South African Wood and Laminate Flooring Association) 

There are 2 possible ways of installing under wood floor heating.
 

1. Screed Application
The element is affixed to the screed level and covered with a fibreglass mesh.

2.

Dry encapsulated heating system (Similar to carpet heating.)

This is a dry application and the heater is placed on top of the wood floor combilay or rubberlay just below the timber floor. This application is generally used in conjunction with rubberlay as no heat transfer takes place with this product and it is not compatible with a screed application, approximately 1.5mm thick.

Carpet Heating

Carpet heating is installed directly below the carpet surface on top of the under felt. This ensures that the heating system is insulated form screed surface, resulting in minimal unnecessary heat loss taking place with all the heat penetrating directly through the carpet surface. With a response time of less than 30 minutes, this application is extremely successful and the heating system can be used as necessary. 

RSA Bardo offers a variety of pre-manufactured heating pads in various sizes, power outputs and shapes to accommodate any room layout. 

Carpet heating operates at a 160 watt per m² power density and is manufactured from a multi stranded earth shielded element. The element is secured between triple layers of aluminium sheeting, incorporating a polyethylene reinforced centre of waterproofing. 

All carpet heating systems are double insulated and connected to the house ELCB. The incorporation of an aluminium sheet ensures excellent heat spread with no intensified hotspots on the carpet. The self regulating element ensures no overheating and fire hazard. Carpeted Heating is a safe, healthy and economical way to ensure total comfort. 

All floor heating systems are managed by analogue, digital or intelligent digital programmable thermostats, ensuring total comfort at affordable running cost.

Under Screed

Screed Heating systems are manufactured from a multi strand durable E.F.T. insulated element fitted with a full multi strand earth shielding which is connected to the house ELCB. This makes the product complaint with legislation and safe to install even in wet areas.

For the above, the heater is affixed directly to the concrete bed or correction screed and covered with the final floor covering normally +/- 25-35mm thick. Although these applications take slightly longer to heat up, the high power self-regulating element still ensures a cost effective heating solution. 

In most applications a screed heater with a power density of 200 watt per m² will cover ± 70% of the actual floor area (depending on the individual room's heat loss factors) The configuration of the element and layout is manipulated in such a way that the heating element is positioned in the areas were you will be in contact with the floor surface. 

Bathrooms and dresser units are dealt with individually and generally have a 100% floor coverage ensuring no unwanted cold patches on the floor, as you are generally bare foot in these areas.  

Screed heating applications are done on the concrete bed below the colour harden top screed surface. Floors are prepared with a primer which ensures proper bond between the screed and the floor heating system. This ensures no delaminating. The heating element is covered with a layer of protective fiberglass mesh as to protect the heater from damage during the screeding process. 

All floor heating systems are managed by either analogue, digital or intelligent digital programmable thermostats, ensuring total comfort at affordable running cost.

FAQ
Q: Can I install tile heating under existing tiled floors?
A: Unfortunately not. The installation of tile heating can only be done before the tiles are laid. If however you have purchased a new existing home without tile heating, you can have a carpet heater installed under a loose lay rug.


Q: Will tile heating crack my tiles?
A: No. The temperatures attained by floor heating systems are even lower than your floor may reach on a hot summer's day. It is however important to have your tiles installed professionally and according to manufacturers recommendations.


Q: Do I need expansion joints on my tiled floor?
A: Absolutely. All tiled floors need expansion joints and with heating installed the need for expansion joints is even more critical.


Q: Is it safe to have under tile heating in my bathroom?
A: Absolutely and with RSA Bardo Electrical it is totally safe. RSA Bardo Electrical installs only fully earthed heaters as per legislation. Of all the rooms in your home this is the one room where you deserve the comfort a floor heating system provides.


Q: Must I turn off the whole system if I am going away for the week-end?
A: No. It is advisable to set the temperature down a little so that when you return, all you have to do is adjust it to your desired comfort level and you will enjoy the comfort again in no time at all.


Q: Can I install tile heating myself?
A: We would prefer that you did not. Floor heating systems are professionally installed through our trained personnel.


Q: What happens if something goes wrong with my tile heating system?
A: At least all is not lost. RSA Bardo Electrical has a team of technicians trained to give you your comfort back when you need it most. We can pin point the fault through the tile, repair the heater and will have you comfortable in the shortest possible time.
